Some hints on using the LiveDVD
The default user is cascadoss (no password).
For system administration tasks $su root works without password as well.
This LiveDVD is based on the Fedora 8 Linux distribution, see the related documentation in
/usr/local/share/doc/CASCADOSS_2.0-LiveDVD-doc
/usr/local/share/doc/Fedora-doc
/usr/local/share/doc/GIS-doc
The directory /usr/local/share/GIS-data contains various demo datasets.
The attribute "Live" means that using some "Linux magic" the LiveDVD seems to be a full-fledged system.
With appropriate rights you (the cascadoss user) can create/copy/remove files or directories, the root user can even upgrade or remove software packages and data etc.
All files and directories on the DVD can be located by the locate command, see
$man locate
$locate bash.1
/usr/share/man/man1/bash.1.gz
/usr/share/man/pl/man1/bash.1.gz
$locate bin/kghos
/usr/bin/kghostview
If some application cannot be found in the menu system, we can try another way, eg.
$which thuban
/usr/bin/thuban
$locate bin/thuban
/usr/bin/thuban
$locate -i geoserver|grep bin
/usr/local/geoserver/bin
/usr/local/geoserver/bin/shutdown.sh
/usr/local/geoserver/bin/startup.sh
/usr/local/sbin/geoserver_shutdown
/usr/local/sbin/geoserver_startup
The Fedora distribution uses the rpm package manager:
$man rpm
The file
/var/log/rpmpkgs contains the list of the installed rpm packages
$ grep firefox /var/log/rpmpkgs
firefox-3.0.3-1.fc8.remi.i386.rpm
To query some information about an installed package you should type in only the first part of the package name:
$ rpm -qi Thuban-1.2.1

You can use the more advanced "yum" package manager, or one of the graphical interfaces smart, kyum, yumex to query, remove and install packages during a session.
Locally compiled or just untarred/unzipped nonstandard, ie. non-rpm packages, data and documentation are deployed under /usr/local:
# ls /usr/local bin etc geonetwork GoogleEarth gvSIG include ivics-1.4 Kosmo-1.2 sbin fgs geoserver-1.7.0 isis jump lib share
